Converting Time and Calculating Time
Converting time swaps between hours, minutes and seconds. You multiply for a smaller unit and divide for a larger one, so 1 h = 60 min. Calculating time means adding or subtracting minutes and seconds separately.

What are Units of Time?
- Time is measured in seconds (s), minutes (min), hours (h), and days.
- The conversion rates you must know: min, 60 , and day.
How to Convert Units of Time?
- Converting to a smaller unit means multiplying; converting to a larger unit means dividing.
- For example, min (×60) and min (÷60).
How to Add Time?
- Add minutes and seconds separately.
- If seconds are 60 or more, convert 60 s into 1 min.
How to Subtract Time?
- Subtract minutes and seconds separately.
- If there are not enough seconds, exchange 1 min for 60 s first.
Practice Questions
Test your understanding
How many minutes are in 2 hours?
Correct! 🎉 +10 pointsNot quite right
There are 60 minutes in 1 hour, so 2 hours minutes.
Convert 180 seconds into minutes.
Correct! 🎉 +10 pointsNot quite right
There are 60 seconds in 1 minute. Divide 180 by 60: minutes.
Convert 2 days and 6 hours into just hours.
Correct! 🎉 +20 pointsNot quite right
Each day has 24 hours, so 2 days equals 48 hours. Adding 6 hours gives a total of 54 hours.
How many minutes are there in 2 hours and 30 minutes?
Correct! 🎉 +20 pointsNot quite right
Two hours equals 120 minutes, and adding 30 minutes gives a total of 150 minutes.
A movie lasts for 2 hours and 15 minutes. How many minutes is that in total?
Correct! 🎉 +20 pointsNot quite right
Each hour has 60 minutes, so 2 hours equals 120 minutes. Adding 15 minutes gives a total of 135 minutes.
Subtract 15 minutes and 30 seconds from 45 minutes and 20 seconds.
Correct! 🎉 +30 pointsNot quite right
Subtract 15 minutes from 45 minutes, leaving 30 minutes. Since 20 seconds is smaller than 30 seconds, borrow 1 minute, reducing the minutes to 29. Now subtract 30 seconds from 80 seconds, giving 50 seconds. The final answer is 29 minutes and 50 seconds.

The questions students bump into most on this topic
The basic units used in everyday maths are seconds, minutes, hours, and days. 60 seconds make 1 minute, 60 minutes make 1 hour, and 24 hours make 1 day. These three relationships are all you need. With them, you can swap from one unit of time to another using multiplication or division.
Multiply when you go from a larger unit to a smaller unit. This includes hours into minutes, and minutes into seconds. Divide when you go from a smaller unit to a larger unit, such as seconds into minutes. The conversion factor is 60 for these steps, and 24 between hours and days.
Multiply the number of hours by 60, because each hour contains 60 minutes. For example, 2 hours becomes 2 × 60 = 120 minutes. You multiply because you are converting from a larger unit (hours) to a smaller unit (minutes). That step always uses multiplication.
Divide the number of seconds by 60, because every 60 seconds make 1 minute. For example, 300 seconds becomes 300 ÷ 60 = 5 minutes. You divide because you are converting from a smaller unit (seconds) to a larger unit (minutes). That step always uses division.
Exchange 60 of those seconds for 1 extra minute, and keep the remaining seconds. For example, 65 seconds becomes 1 minute and 5 seconds. Add the extra minute to your minutes total. Then write the answer using the new minutes total and the leftover seconds.
Borrow 1 minute from the top minutes column, and add 60 seconds to the top seconds. The minutes go down by 1, and the seconds go up by 60. You can then subtract the seconds normally, and finish by subtracting the minutes using the reduced top minutes total.
