Unit Conversions

Everything you need to learn unit conversions, broken down into simple, bite-sized cards.

1. Metric Length

Metric length units go mm → cm → m → km, each linked by a power of 10. Converting to a bigger unit? Divide. To a smaller unit? Multiply.

ConversionFactor
mm → cm÷ 10
cm → m÷ 100
m → km÷ 1000

2. Mass Units

Metric mass units go mg → g → kg → t, each linked by a factor of 1000. Converting to a bigger unit? Divide. To a smaller unit? Multiply.

ConversionFactor
mg → g÷ 1000
g → kg÷ 1000
kg → t÷ 1000

3. Time Units

Time is not metric, as it uses 60 and 24 instead of powers of 10. Learn the key conversions:

1 hour=60 minutes1 \text{ hour} = 60 \text{ minutes}

1 minute=60 seconds1 \text{ minute} = 60 \text{ seconds}

1 day=24 hours1 \text{ day} = 24 \text{ hours}

4. Area Units

Area is measured in square units. When converting, square the length factor.

1 m2=(100 cm)2=10000 cm21 \text{ m}^2 = (100 \text{ cm})^2 = 10\,000 \text{ cm}^2

1 km2=(1000 m)2=1000000 m21 \text{ km}^2 = (1000 \text{ m})^2 = 1\,000\,000 \text{ m}^2

5. Volume Units

Volume is measured in cubic units. When converting, cube the length factor.

1 m3=(100 cm)3=1000000 cm31 \text{ m}^3 = (100 \text{ cm})^3 = 1\,000\,000 \text{ cm}^3

1 litre=1000 cm31 \text{ litre} = 1000 \text{ cm}^3
