When your child knows the rule but not what it means

A correct answer alone doesn't tell you what your child understands. A child who turns 3/6 into 1/2 and thinks the amount has become smaller has remembered the rule. They haven't understood that both fractions represent the same quantity.

When the method that always worked stops working

Understanding what the numbers mean is one part of the work. Your child also needs to see what each percentage is taken from.

A coat costs £50. The shop puts the price up by 20%, then has a 20% off sale. Your child expects it to be £50 again, but it's £48. The 20% up is £10, because it comes from £50. The 20% off is £12, because it comes from £60.

When every step needs a reason, not just a rule

Algebra asks your child to understand the reason for each step too. Working backwards solves a simple equation such as x + 3 = 8. By Year 8 they meet 3(x + 1) + 2 = 2(x + 4) − 1: brackets to expand, terms to collect and x on both sides. Each move needs a reason, not just a rule.

Year 8 is the year with the least to go on. There is no national test, and most school reports say how your child is doing, not which skills are secure.
