Where to start
when Year 7 maths
gets harder
Your child did well at primary school. Now they bring home maths they don't understand. When you try to explain it, they say “That's not how we do it at school.” You want to help, but neither of you knows where to start.
This is one of the most common things we hear from Year 7 parents. Maths Angel decides what to work on next, as a private tutor would, and explains it clearly. Your child practises, and their answers guide what we recommend next. You get a way to support them without becoming their maths teacher.
Find where your child is stuck: the free Year 7 Maths Check
A good primary report tells you how they were doing overall. It doesn't tell you which step is stopping them now. When a new lesson builds on a concept they haven't understood, the explanation starts too far ahead.
That's why we begin with your child's answers. The free Maths Check samples a few skills for their year and recommends a starting lesson. They have a specific piece of work to begin, even when “I don't get it” is all they know how to say. No account or card is needed to take the check.

As they practise, Maths Angel uses their answers to recommend further work. We link skills to the earlier knowledge they need, so those recommendations also include earlier ideas to revisit. You don't have to work backwards through their schoolbooks to choose the next lesson.
Maths words your child doesn't know yet, explained in the lesson
Understanding that lesson starts with understanding its words. Take a child who knows 6 × 4 but stops at “find the product of 6 and 4”. Explaining that “product” means the result of multiplying gives them the instruction they need.
We explain maths words as part of teaching each step. Our videos show what's happening visually, so your child sees why the method works as they follow it.
Our videos are not AI-generated. Every lesson is written, animated and reviewed in-house by our team in London. Maths experts who have taught at university write the content, and professionally trained designers draw and animate each step.
Human reviewers check the finished video for correct maths and clear explanations before release. The team spends around 100 hours on each video so your child gets a clear lesson in three to four minutes, to pause or replay, with time to follow the part that confused them. See how we teach.
ChatCat answers the question your child didn't ask in class
Your child also needs a way to ask about the step that still doesn't make sense. At a new school, that means speaking up in front of new teachers and classmates. When your child keeps a question to themselves, you're the one who hears it over homework.

Good question. Product means the result of multiplying. So the product of 6 and 4 is 6 × 4 = 24. Want to try one?Maths Angel gives them help with that question while they're learning. Inside the lesson, they can ask ChatCat, our AI maths helper, “What does that word mean?” or “Can you explain that step again?” They have someone to ask without waiting for you to remember the method.
After the explanation, your child attempts the practice and checks their working against the solutions. This shows them how the answer is reached and gives us information about what they understand.
ChatCat is built for children and stays on maths. It always makes clear it's an AI, it won't wander off topic, and it checks messages for anything unsafe. Read how we keep your child safe.
The Skills Map: what your child can do and what to practise next
With a free Maths Angel account, those quiz answers update your child's Skills Map: a record of the skills they've practised and how they're getting on. We use that record to recommend what to practise next, including earlier work that needs another look.
