Q: Foundation or Higher maths: which should my child do, and who decides?

The school decides, usually in Year 11 when exam entries go in, and can normally still change it before the deadline. Ask which tier they’re planning and when it’s settled. In England, Foundation awards grades 1 to 5 and Higher 4 to 9, with a 3 for a narrow miss. Higher has more algebra and harder reasoning. The Foundation cap is an exam rule and says nothing about your child.

Q: When are Year 10 mocks, and do they matter?

Each school sets its own dates, so ask; many run a Year 10 mock in the summer term. The grade doesn't go on any certificate, but it often feeds into set and tier decisions. Its real use is showing which older skills fall apart in a full GCSE-style paper, usually the first your child has sat. Ask the teacher which ones did, and put those first.

Q: Is GCSE maths hard, or is my child just behind?

Both can be true. In England, half the marks at Foundation and 60% at Higher go to reasoning and problem-solving. A child who knows every method can still lose marks when the question doesn't say which to use. Older skills fail too. Pearson's 2024 Higher Paper 1 report notes marks lost to division and negative numbers despite good preparation.

Q: How many GCSE maths papers are there, and how long are they?

Three per tier in England, each 1 hour 30 minutes, sat in May and June of Year 11. One paper is non-calculator; which one depends on the board. They test the whole specification, so Key Stage 3 number and algebra can be examined in Year 11. Government guidance keeps the formulae sheet until the qualifications are reformed, so expect one. Wales and Northern Ireland have their own qualifications.

Q: What topics does my child cover in Year 10 maths?

There's no fixed Year 10 list. The GCSE specification is one document that each school spreads over two or three years, so Year 10 maths topics differ from school to school. Most cover algebra such as simultaneous equations and quadratics, ratio and proportion, Pythagoras and trigonometry, and probability. Ask for the school's scheme of learning, and which earlier topics it assumes are secure.

Your child does the homework, but a small error still spoils the answer. As the GCSE course grows, it's hard to tell whether they need help with the new topic or something they learnt years ago. Working out where the trouble starts shouldn't fall to you.

When an old skill lets the new work down

Year 10 maths is built on everything before it. Your child sets up a pair of simultaneous equations correctly, then slips on a negative number in the last line: in 5x = −15, losing the minus sign turns −3 into 3. The new work gets the blame for a Year 7 mistake.

When a right answer still loses a mark

Even with the working right, the answer can be incomplete. Your child solves x² = 9, writes x = 3, checks it and moves on. The mark scheme wants x = −3 as well, because −3 squared is 9 too. A GCSE paper takes that mark quietly, with nothing to show anything was missed.

Because (−3)² is 9 as well. Squaring hides the sign, so x² = 9 has two answers: x = 3 and x = −3. Write both.

When the mock decides Foundation or Higher

Many schools run a Year 10 mock in the summer term, usually the first full GCSE-style paper your child has sat, and the grade often feeds into the set and the tier. The paper shows which older skills fall apart under exam conditions. It shows them after the mock, when the decision is already being made.
