When revision looks busy but nothing sticks
Rereading notes and highlighting look like revision and feel like progress. Long notes make it slow, and still leave your child unsure what they actually remember. In the exam, they have to produce the method with nothing in front of them, and a page they have read four times doesn't test that.

One concept per card, so before the exam they can review a topic in minutes, spot what is missing and put the revision there. When they can follow a worked answer but not start one
Revision goes well while the worked answer is on the page. Your child reads each line of a simultaneous equations solution and nods: add the two equations, the y terms cancel, x = 3. Then the exam gives them two equations and a blank space, and the first line won't come. Following a method and producing one are different skills, and the paper only tests the second.

With no answer to copy, they have to choose the step, try it, get it wrong and go again, then take a new pair of equations and repeat the whole method. What they have done themselves, more than once, is what comes back to them in the exam room.
When they're stuck and you can't help
Year 11 maths is a long way from most parents' school days. Your child gets stuck on a step at nine in the evening, the teacher isn't there until tomorrow, and the revision session ends there. You want to help. You just can't remember how the quadratic formula works either.

After a hard mock, “revise everything you got wrong” is the instruction that comes home. It is honest, and it is no help. The list is the whole course, your child doesn't know which topic to open first, and a conversation about all of it leaves them where they started.
