Year 9 is where the topics stop arriving one at a time. A question about a right-angled triangle needs squares, square roots and a bit of rearranging, and a child who knows all three separately can still freeze when they turn up together.

A worksheet headed “Ratio” tells your child which method to use. A test question doesn't. If they can only start once someone names the method, that is the skill to work on now, because GCSE papers never name it.

When the summer test decides the GCSE set
In many schools the Year 9 end-of-year test feeds into the GCSE set, and sometimes the tier. The report tells you the mark. It doesn't tell you which earlier skills cost those marks, and that is what you need to know before the test, not after.
