Decimals and Fractions

Key concept

Decimals and fractions are two ways to show the same value. To convert a decimal to a fraction, count the decimal places to set the denominator 10, 100 or 1000, then simplify if you can. So 0.01 = 1/100.

Place value chart introducing decimals, sort digits from hundreds to thousandths, with the number 12.345 split into whole number and fractional parts.Showing decimal to fraction, 0.1 as 1/10, 0.01 as 1/100, 0.001 as 1/1000, 0.4 as 4/10 or 2/5, 0.75 as 75/100 or 3/4, and 0.028 as 28/1000 or 7/250.Decimals greater than 1 to fractions, showing conversion of 8.25 to 825/100, 165/20, and 33/4, and breaking 8.25 into 8 and 0.25 as 8 + 1/4.

The Decimal Place Value

  • The decimal point separates the whole number and the fractional part.
  • Each place to the right of the decimal point is 10 times smaller: tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Converting Decimals (Less Than 1) to Fractions

  • Write the decimal as a fraction over 10, 100, or 1000.
  • Simplify the fraction if possible. For example, .

Converting Decimals (Greater Than 1) to Fractions

  • Split the number into a whole number and a decimal part.
  • Convert the decimal part to a fraction, then combine with the whole number.
  • For example,

The questions students bump into most on this topic

0.75 has two decimal places, so it becomes 75 over 100. Dividing the numerator and the denominator by 25 gives 3/4. So 0.75 is equal to three-quarters, which is the same as three out of four equal parts of a whole.

0.4 has one decimal place, so the denominator is 10, which gives the fraction 4 over 10. Dividing the numerator and the denominator by 2 simplifies it to 2/5. So 0.4 is equal to two-fifths, or two parts out of five.

0.028 has three decimal places, so the denominator is 1000, which gives the fraction 28 over 1000. Simplifying by dividing the numerator and the denominator by 4 leaves 7/250. So 0.028 is equal to seven over two hundred and fifty, in its simplest form.

Count the digits after the decimal point to set the denominator. One place gives 10, two gives 100, and three gives 1000. Write the digits without the point as the numerator, then simplify the fraction by dividing by the highest common factor.

Yes. A decimal and a fraction can both show parts of a whole. 0.1 means one-tenth, which is exactly the same as the fraction 1/10. Both describe one part of a whole that has been split into ten equal parts.
