How to Find Percentage of a Number
Percentage of a number is a part of it out of 100. To find it, change the percent to a decimal and multiply, so 20% of 180 is 0.2 × 180 = 36. As a shortcut, 10% of a number is just that number ÷ 10.

The questions students bump into most on this topic
Write the percentage as a decimal, then multiply it by the number. The formula is Base Value × Percentage Rate = Percentage Value. For example, 30% becomes 0.3, and 200 × 0.3 = 60, so 30% of 200 is 60. You can also multiply by a simple fraction when that is easier.
Divide the percentage by 100 to write it as a decimal. So 30% becomes 0.3 and 60% becomes 0.6. You then multiply the base value by this decimal to find the percentage value. Writing the rate as a decimal is the first step in the calculation.
To find 10% of any number, move the decimal point one place to the left. For example, 10% of 1,500 is 150. This gives you 10% quickly, without a calculator. It also pairs neatly with the 1% method for other percentages.
To find 1% of any number, move the decimal point two places to the left. For example, 1% of 1,500 is 15. Once you have 1%, you multiply it by any percentage you need. To find 12%, you multiply that 1% by 12.
Yes. Some percentages match a simple fraction, so you can multiply by the fraction instead of a decimal. For example, 25% is the same as a quarter, or 1/4. To find 25% of 120, you cross-cancel 120 and 4, which makes the multiplication easier.
