Why he started Maths Angel
Alex spent years tutoring maths, and came to feel for the students who were stuck without a tutor. He knows from his own experience how hard it can be to struggle in class without help, sitting there feeling awful and just waiting for the lesson to end. With Maths Angel, he wants students who are stuck to get unstuck fast, the same way his own students could. Maths Angel was built for the moment a student is stuck on a problem alone.
His qualifications and teaching background
Alex works as a Senior Quant Analyst in London. He holds an MSc in Statistics from the London School of Economics, where he graduated with distinction, and an MSc in Finance and Econometrics from Queen Mary University of London, where he graduated top of his class. He studied economics as an undergraduate at the University of Bonn, which awarded him three teaching awards for his maths and statistics tutoring.
The tutoring he wants every student to have
Alex always wanted to give great one-to-one tutoring to far more students, not only the few who could sit in front of him. With AI and the right technology, he finally can. That is the point of Maths Angel: the best of private tutoring, opened up to every student who needs it.
He is serious about what Maths Angel is, and is not. It is an angel for students, there for the child who is stuck, not another admin tool for the classroom. He cares most about the families who could never afford a private tutor, and he wants those students to have the same help as anyone else. At Maths Angel he is pushing forward the future of AI in education: simple, clear and personalised to each student.
How does his teaching shape the product?
The closed loop is Alex's tutoring habit turned into a platform. A good tutor checks what landed and points you at the right next thing. Maths Angel does the same in sequence: it diagnoses, explains, lets you practise, tracks how you are doing, then recommends the next step.
That is why ChatCat sits at the centre rather than off to the side. It is the “stay around for the next question” part of a session. The design follows the teaching: ChatCat exists because that is what a tutor does. And ChatCat does what a good tutor does, diagnosing where a student is stuck and guiding them through it, while being more affordable, more accessible, more flexible and completely judgement-free.
